Sometimes, when I feel myself drifting closer towards the abyss of insanity, I like to listen to some music,  to take my mind away from all the implicit messages and concealed truths I’ve been granted – both blessed and cursed – to be able to discover and decipher from the world around me (mainly from pornographic movies). But not just any music will do, it will have to be the pinnacle of human existential expression, something so extraordinary that it touches the very essence of my being. These musical masterpieces are very rare to come by, you have to be both susceptible and in the right frame of mind, but every now and then you stumble upon them by chance, and they make such a deep impact that you’re never quite the same person again. I’ve been blessed to have had these epiphanies occur every now and then throughout my life, but as life progresses they become more scarce and I fear eventually they will disappear altogether. That is why I’ve decided to share them here, so that future generations will be able to enjoy them like I have, without having to embark on the arduous journeys I’ve had to endure to find them.

The first little melody I’ve decided to share is a song recorded by the Russian folk music researcher and musician Dmitri Pokrovsky, who traveled to rural areas across Russia during the 1970’s to rediscover and record traditional folk music.  What he found was music that had been passed on from generation to generation for centuries, harmonically complex songs that had a unique and authentic form, that provided a glimpse into a forgotten past. Pokrovsky did us all a favor by recording them, without him they would’ve probably fallen into oblivion. The remote villages where the music originated from are long gone, and Pokrovsky passed away in 1996, but thanks to his efforts we can still enjoy the songs and imagine a way of life that has now been long extinct.
